This bill reduces the ability of local school districts to limit the type of textbooks and other literature given to students in schools. This means that school boards may no longer choose to remove pornography or other sexually perverse material from school libraries if they desire to. CPAC recognizes that the purpose of the public school system is to facilitate learning and that this end requires strategic planning governing which books are placed in schools. CPAC also recognizes that this means that unnecessary and non-instructive materials should be excluded from school libraries to make way for literature that will improve a child’s intellectual faculties. CPAC further recognizes that books that depict graphic sex and other perverse activities are less constructive and necessary to student learning than other alternative books. This bill prevents the replacement of the former with the latter. CPAC, therefore, opposed this bill. The Assembly passed this bill on September 7, 2023 by a vote of 61-17 and the bill later became law.
