RC 99

Resurrecting the Long-Dead Equal Rights Amendment.

2023 - US Senate

Vote Description

This resolution sponsored by Sen. Benjamin Cardin attempts to ratify the Left’s Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) to the U.S. Constitution by eliminating the 1979 ratification deadline. The ERA has nothing to do with treating individuals equally, but instead is a tool that was introduced by the Left in 1972 to provide judges carte blanche authority to abuse the legal system. It would, for example, give them a bludgeon that could be used to attack the private sector and create fictitious “rights” to abortions. The original ERA failed to meet the congressionally established deadline (1979). In response, this unconstitutional resolution seeks to provide a retroactive extension to the deadline. CPAC supports the inherent rights of every individual and opposes government discrimination on the basis of characteristics such as sex or race. CPAC opposes the revival of the Left’s ERA at both the federal and state level and opposed this resolution. The Senate voted for cloture on this resolution on April 27, 2023 by a vote of 51-47 but the resolution did not progress any further.
