The Mississippi State Legislature has gotten more conservative over the past year, earning its best ranking since 2016, according to the American Conservative Union Foundation’s annual ratings of state legislatures. 

The American Conservative Union Foundation conducts an annual, in-depth analysis to rate all 8,000 lawmakers in America, revealing their positions on a wide variety of issues directly affecting our communities and families.

Overall, the Republicans in the state legislature moved six points more conservative, and even the Democrats moved seven points in the right direction. Conservative voices are playing a bigger role in shaping public policy in Mississippi, which will be a benefit to everyone in the state.

Mississippi Legislature Earns Most Conservative Rating in Four Years, According to New Analysis

Alexandria, VA—During the 2020 session, Mississippi state lawmakers voted more conservatively than in the past four years, according to new analysis by ACUF, the host of the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC). Early results from the 2020 analysis indicate Mississippi’s increased conservative voting will likely land the state in the upper half of ACUF’s Most Conservative Legislatures in the country.

Review the scorecard to see the ratings of all Mississippi state lawmakers and find out which votes ACUF (American Conservative Union Foundation) scored.

The overall average conservative rating for Mississippi improved by seven points (from 47% to 54%). The improvement marks the first time since the 2016 session (62%) that lawmakers on average voted in favor of the conservative position more often than they voted against it.

“Our analysis shows that conservative principles are beginning to take a greater role in shaping public policy in Mississippi,” said ACU Chairman Matt Schlapp. “We believe conservative solutions are the best playbook for helping people succeed, and it appears Mississippi legislators on both sides of the aisle are open to exploring that. We look forward to their continued success.”

A greater number of lawmakers (seven) also qualified for awards for conservative voting records. Lawmakers who voted for the conservative position on at least four of five issues on average qualified for awards. The 2020 awardees are Sen. Melanie Sojourner (81%), Reps. Dana Criswell (94%), Steve Hopkins (93%), Joel Bomgar (91%), Chris Brown (90%), Brady Williamson (86%) and Dan Eubanks (85%).

ACUF’s Ratings of Congress and Ratings of the States are initiatives of ACUF’s Center for Legislative Accountability (CLA). These ratings are designed to reflect how over 8,000 elected officials across the nation view the role of government while illustrating the differences between chambers of the legislature and revealing lawmakers’ positions on a wide variety of issues that directly affect citizens.

ACU Foundation reviewed each piece of legislation voted on in both chambers of the legislature to produce average scores of each chamber as well as individual scores for each sitting member.
