CPAC Releases Utah Legislative Scorecard, Revealing a Mixed Bag of Bills from the Beehive State.

ALEXANDRIA, VA (June 1, 2023) — CPAC Foundation’s analysis reveals that, though Republican lawmakers stood up to the Leftist cultural agenda in Utah, these legislators still missed many opportunities to promote conservative fiscal policies by voting for various bills that misuse taxpayer funds, resulting in a mixed 2022 session.

“Utah elects significantly more republicans than other states yet fails to pass significant conservative policies like that of Florida, Tennessee, and Texas,” said CPAC Chairman Matt Schlapp. “Led by a disappointing Governor in Spencer Cox, the legislature was forced to battle with him to pass protections for girls sports and end the Governor’s overreaching policies instituted during the Chinese coronavirus.”

Several Utah state legislators are recognized by CPAC for their conservative voting records based on a just-released analysis from CPAC Foundation’s Center for Legislative Accountability. The following members of the Utah State Legislature earned CPAC’s Award for Conservative Achievement for voting with the conservative position at least 80% of the time:

Senate:

Daniel McCay (89%)

John D. Johnson (85%)

Ronald Winterton (82%)

Don L. Ipson (80%)

House:

Kera Birkeland (89%)

Kay J. Christofferson (86%)

A. Cory Maloy (86%)

Mike J. Petersen (86%)

Ryan D. Wilcox (86%)

Travis A. Seegmiller (85%)

Jordan D. Teuscher (85%)

Keven J. Stratton (85%)

Mark A. Strong (85%)

Rex P. Shipp (83%)

Ken Ivory (82%)

Karianne Lisonbee (82%)

Candace B. Pierucci (82%)

Adam Robertson (82%)

Jefferson Moss (81%)

Nelson T. Abbott (80%)

Calvin R. Musselman (80%)

Val L. Peterson (80%)

The bills scored in CPAC’s 2022 Ratings of Utah addressed protections against men competing in women’s sports, Second Amendment rights, school curriculum, election integrity, tax reductions, and tax mechanisms that prop up government-favored products and industries.

These issues, coupled with our mission to protect life, liberty, property and uphold the American family, created the basis by which CPAC Foundation rated Utah legislators.

The Center for Legislative Accountability (CLA), an initiative of the CPAC Foundation, is the premier organization for holding lawmakers accountable. The CLA produces the longest-running conservative congressional scorecard and our state program is the only one in the nation that scores all 8,000 lawmakers in the 50 states across every policy area.
