Oregon’s Coalition of Radical Left Adds Seven New Members

Alexandria, VA — Five freshmen and two veteran lawmakers of the Oregon Legislature joined the ranks of Oregon’s Coalition of the Radical Left by voting against the conservative position at least 90% of the time in the 2019 session, according to the just-released ratings of the 2019 session published by The American Conservative Union Foundation (ACUF), host of the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC).

The new members of the Radical Left include Oregon Secretary of State Democratic nominee Sen. Shemia Fagan and Rep. Tiffiny Mitchell, who faced a recall petition which cited her support for cap-and-trade and tax increases. The other lawmakers who qualified for the Radical Left were: Sen. Jeff Golden, Reps. Courtney Neron, Rachel Prusak, Jeff Reardon and Marty Wilde.

“With no regard for the budgets of working families, Governor Brown and her cohort of socialist lawmakers tried to ratchet up heating, cooling and electricity costs for the sake of their leftist cap-and-trade scheme,” said ACU Chairman Matt Schlapp. “But thanks to a few brave conservative lawmakers, this socialist plot was rejected. We urge the legislature to abandon Governor Brown’s misguided notions of ‘California for All’ and instead tackle the problems working families care about.”

Despite the leftward trend amongst Democrats, the Oregon Legislature’s overall conservative score rose three points compared to the previous session (28.08% to 31.14%). This improvement is due to more conservative voting records from Republicans who improved by 14 points (59.37% to 73.48%).

ACUF’s Ratings of Congress and Ratings of the States are initiatives of ACUF’s Center for Legislative Accountability (CLA). These ratings are designed to reflect how over 8,000 elected officials across the nation view the role of government while illustrating the differences between chambers of the legislature and revealing lawmakers’ positions on a wide variety of issues that directly affect citizens.

ACU Foundation reviewed each piece of legislation voted on in both chambers of the legislature to produce average scores of each chamber as well as individual scores for each sitting member.
